About the Project

Supervisor: Dr. Kui Yu.
Changjiang Chair Professor of Sichuan University. Executive Editor ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces

Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have unique size-dependent optical properties. These nanocrystals (NCs) have potential in many areas including light-emitting diodes, lasing, photovoltaics and bio-labelling/bio-imaging. So far, much work has been focusing on the synthesis of QDs with the control the size and size distribution. The bandgap absorption peak of conventional QDs is relatively broad, compared to magic-size clusters (MSCs). The size variation of the former is inevitable leading to inhomogeneous spectral line broadening. For the latter, the size distribution is tight and little inhomogeneous spectral line broadening is present. In a specific synthesized batch, MSCs are sometimes produced along with conventional QDs. The formation pathways of MSCs and conventional QDs remain unclear. Our research group focuses on these fundamental issues of the formation of colloidal NCs. The students are expected to synthesize colloidal NCs and characterize them by various techniques including optical absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, NMR, TEM, XRD and SAXS. Training will be provided by our group members.
