About the Project

Dr Marioni offers a PhD position to explore spatial heterogeneity in gene expression profiles at single-cell resolution. The project will exploit recently developed spatial transcriptomics technologies to model how heterogeneity in expression varies both between and within individual cells. The Marioni lab has pioneered the development of computational methods for single cell genomics and has applied these methods to understand how variability in expression between cells underlies different biological processes, including early development and cancer. The lab is based both at CRUK CI and at EMBL-EBI and has excellent links with researchers across both institutes. Additionally, Dr Marioni co-chairs the analysis working group of the Human Cell Atlas project as well as co-ordinating the European contribution to the Data Coordination Platform.

The successful applicant will have/or expect to gain a degree in a quantitative field like mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, bioinformatics, or computer science. The applicant should have a good biological background and excellent computing skills. The atmosphere within the lab and at CRUK CI more generally is very collaborative - hence, good communication skills are key.

Funding Notes

This studentship is funded by Cancer Research UK and includes full funding for University and College fees and in addition, a stipend of £19,000 per annum, initially for 3 years, with funding for a further year possible as required.

No nationality restrictions apply to this Cancer Research UK funded studentship. Applications are invited from recent graduates or final year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a first/upper second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from any recognised university worldwide.
