About the Project

Project Objectives
To model the performance of a scroll expander operating on compressed air and to determine the factors with the greatest effect on efficiency.

Methodology proposed
1. Replicate the geometry of a scroll expander using a CAD software package.
2. Replicate the working principal using a CFD/FEA software package
3. Benchmark the simulation against experimental data already obtained.
4. Analyse the performance of the expander
5. Identify areas of inefficiency
6. Optimise the design based on the simulation results.

Expected outcomes: (e.g. deliverables & strategic impacts)
1. A greater understanding of scroll expander operation.
2. Improved design.
3. Higher efficiency components.
4. Publications on the subject of scroll expander performance, in particular targeting the 5th international seminar on ORC power
systems.
5. Alignment with engCore research interest/furthering knowledge of “mechanical design and FEA”.
