About the Project
The Bioprocess Laboratory (BPL, chair Prof. Sven Panke) of the ETH Zurich is offering a PhD position in the fields of drug metabolite synthesis and optimization of whole cell biocatalysts using high-throughput experimenting, effective immediately. The goal is the development of a recombinant E. coli strain efficiently performing CYP3A4-catalyzed hydroxylation of pharmaceuticals for tox-studies by optimizing the electron transport employed for activation of the enzyme. To reach that goal, we will apply an assay for simultaneous quantification coupling and catalytic efficiency and identify beneficial mutants in flow-cytometric assays or with microfluidic setups.
We offer a highly creative and international working environment at the ETH Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) in Basel, Switzerland. The BPL has an internationally recognized track record of scientific excellence in the fields of synthetic biology, metabolic engineering and high-throughput screening. The successful applicant will benefit from a detailed practical and theoretical on-the-job training, individual scientific mentoring as well as the highly collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of the D-BSSE.
We are looking for a highly motivated student with hands-on experience in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and / or related fields. Previous experience with P450 or other hydroxylases is a plus. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) and should have a record of research projects conducted during or after their undergraduate studies. Excellent skills in written and spoken English are essential.
If you are interested please send your application (cover letter, CV, diploma etc.) to Dr. Martin Held ([Email Address Removed]) and Dr. Tsvetan Kardashliev ([Email Address Removed]).
