About the Project

The successful candidate will build on the host lab’s clinical research in the prevention of hypoglycaemia in type 1 diabetes, using real-time monitoring in the exercise laboratory to explore physiological, endocrine and metabolic responses to differing intensities of activity in people with type 1 diabetes and in people with normal glucose tolerance. These data will then be used to inform future treatment strategies to support people with type 1 diabetes to be physically active.
Full training will be given in all applicable techniques, including exercise studies, real-time monitoring, and laboratory assays. The student will have the opportunity to discuss the exact title and nature of the project with the supervisor to suit their interests and incorporate recent advances in this exciting area. The student will be based on the Hammersmith campus.
The host lab is led by Nick Oliver and is a translational multidisciplinary group, developing novel technologies for diabetes. The cross-faculty team includes control engineers, electronic engineers, biological chemists, statistical modelling, and clinical researchers, and works to move innovation from the benchtop to people with diabetes.

Applicants must have a first or upper second class degree from a UK University or the overseas equivalent in a relevant area of biochemistry, physiology, or neuroscience. In addition a Masters degree is preferable but not essential. Experience in molecular biology and in vivo physiology is a major advantage.

Funding Notes

The scholarship is open to UK and EU applicants. It covers a stipend of £17,500pa (2017/8 level) plus university registration fees. The expected start date is October 2018.
