About the Project

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a project to build and operate a high-sensitivity dark matter experiment in the deep mine at SURF (South Dakota, USA) able to probe most of the WIMP parameter space region free from neutrino background. The particle physics and particle astrophysics (PPPA) group at the University of Sheffield is involved in the LZ experiment with a prime responsibility for developing software for modelling and data analysis, simulating background radiation and detection of various particles. The construction of LZ is currently underway and the detector will be operational in 2020. The PhD project will include Monte Carlo modelling for and the data analysis from the LZ experiment. Shifts at the detector site in the USA to monitor detector operation and data quality will be required. There is an opportunity to spend a longer period of time (6 - 12 months) in the USA and be involved in detector operation. The successful candidate should have a good knowledge of particle physics and programming skills. The knowledge of nuclear physics and particle astrophysics is desirable.

Funding Notes

The successful candidate should have a good knowledge of particle physics and programming skills. The knowledge of nuclear physics and particle astrophysics is desirable.

UK students are eligible for STFC funded studentships. Non-UK students will need to have their own funding to cover fees and living expenses. Other options are available for exceptional students.
