Prof Vitaly Kudryavtsev  Applications accepted all year round  Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

Cosmic-ray muons are known to be useful in applications beyond particle astrophysics. They have helped with mapping structure of volcanoes and with finding voids in various geological structures. Other possible applications include studies of geological repositories including monitoring carbon capture, tracing illicit nuclear materials etc. The PPPA group at the University of Sheffield, in collaboration with other institutions and industrial partners, pursues a wide programme related to these muon applications. This PhD project is computational and offers an opportunity for a student to apply the knowledge of particle and astroparticle physics and detector technology, in other areas which are linked to key problems of the contemporary world: climate change, nuclear security etc. The candidate should have a good knowledge of particle physics and programming skills. The knowledge of particle astrophysics is desirable.

Science Graduate School:
As a PhD student in one of the science departments at the University of Sheffield, you’ll be part of the Science Graduate School – a community of postgraduate researchers working across biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and psychology. You’ll get access to training opportunities designed to support your career development by helping you gain professional skills that are essential in all areas of science. You’ll be able to learn how to recognise good research and research behaviour, improve your communication abilities and experience technologies that are used in academia, industry and many related careers. Visit www.sheffield.ac.uk/sgs to learn more.

Funding Notes

The candidate should have a good knowledge of particle physics and programming skills. The knowledge of particle astrophysics is desirable.

UK students are eligible for STFC funded studentships. Non-UK students will need to have their own funding to cover fee and living expenses. Other options are available for exceptional students.
