In association with the giant 10 kton DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) liquid argon neutrino detector being built at Homestake there will need to be a smaller Near Detector at Fermilab. The Sheffield group is collaborating with Bern University and other groups to build and test new pixel readout technology in liquid argon that can replace the conventional multi-wire readout. As part of this Sheffield is building a 1.0m x 0.5m time projection chamber device. The project involves contributing to the design, installation and operation of this with Bern colleagues in Switzerland and subsequent analysis of particle data following transfer to a test beam at CERN or Fermilab. There will be opportunity to conduct liquid argon pixel detector R&D using the Sheffield liquid argon test-stand facility and to study upgrade options for the readout, including comparison of silicon photo-sensors, cryogenic photomultipliers, GEMs and micromegas devices. Critical measurements are anticipated of liquid argon parameters including electron drift. There will be chance of long term attachment (6-12 months) in Bern or at CERN in Switzerland or at the test beam in Fermilab.
