Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
An innovative, competitively funded 4 year PhD programme has been established between the University of Cambridge and MedImmune for April 2018 intake. The programme will provide the opportunity to work at the interface of academia and industry with successful applicants undertaking a significant proportion of their research at both the University of Cambridge and at MedImmune.
The programme aims to promote pre-clinical innovative translational research and to strengthen understanding of disease.
This project aims at assessing innate immune mechanisms in the human intestinal epithelium during health (including development) and diseases such as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). Unique access to a large cohort of human gut samples combined with expertise in the field of organoid technology will allow us to study the functional relevance of selected innate defence mechanisms in the human intestinal epithelium. An additional focus will be placed on the potential impact of epigenetic mechanisms (i.e. DNA methylation) in regulating cellular function. The successful candidate will be able to work at the interface between laboratory research, clinical practice as well as the pharmaceutical industry. Key methodologies include human organoid culture, genomic editing using CRISPR/Cas9, basic bioinformatic analyses of genome wide datasets as well as a wide range of molecular biological techniques (e.g. RT-PCR, western blotting immunostaining etc.). Importantly, the successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and supportive team both at the Cambridge as well as MedImmune site providing tailored support and a friendly/constructive work environment.
