About the Project

Hybrid perovskites are emerging materials for various optoelectronic applications. The excellent electrical and optical properties and material tunability of the perovskite-based materials have greatly advanced the device performance. Fundamentally understanding the photophysical mechanisms is the key to the material design and device optimization. In this project, we will employ ultrafast spectroscopy techniques to explore the photoexcitation dynamics in the crucial timescales of these new generation semiconductors. In collaboration with world-leading materials and device groups, we aim to advance the knowledge of the critical mechanisms related to the applications for photovoltaics, light emitting diodes, and lasers.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Kai Chen, associated with the ultrafast spectroscopy group led by Assoc. Prof. Justin Hodgkiss [1]. The group is based at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) [2], which is located in Wellington, the thriving capital city of New Zealand [3]. We offer a great opportunity to operate and develop advanced spectroscopic systems. The successful candidate will also visit international collaborators for the sample and device preparation, including Prof. Henry Snaith’s group in Oxford, and Prof. Zeger Hens’ group in Ghent.

We are seeking a highly motivated person interested in spectroscopy experiments and advanced materials with a good understanding of physical chemistry or physics. Experience in optics, nonlinear optics, and spectroscopy research would be a plus but not necessary. Applicants should have an engineering, chemistry or physics degree equivalent to the 4-year BSc (Honours) degree in New Zealand, with 1st class Honours, or an MSc. Candidates should satisfy the requirements for admission as a PhD candidate at Victoria University of Wellington [4].

Funding Notes

The scholarship provides a generous non-taxed stipend of NZ$27,000 per annum plus the PhD tuition fee for three years.
