Investigating the mechanisms of redox signalling

A PhD opportunity is available for an international or NZ candidate investigating mechanisms of redox signalling. The aim of our research group is to understand how seemingly non-specific redox signals are translated into regulated changes in protein function. Our focus is on the peroxiredoxin family of H2O2-metabolising enzymes and makes use of a variety of cell biological and protein biochemistry techniques. This project aims to identify peroxiredoxin targets and understand now peroxiredoxins alter specific signalling pathways. Applicants should have a strong background in biochemistry and chemistry.The project will be based at the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand (http://www.otago.ac.nz/biochemistry/index.html) supervised by Dr Liz Ledgerwood.

The successful candidate will be supported through the University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship scheme (http://www.otago.ac.nz/study/scholarships/database/otago014687.html ). This provides a NZ$25,000 tax-free stipend per annum, plus all tuition fees, for 3 years (regardless of the nationality of the candidate). Please note these scholarships are awarded based on student grades plus evidence of research excellence (for example publications). Applicants must have a strong BSc (Hons) or MSc degree in a relevant discipline, good communications skills as well as a willingness to learn, develop and apply new techniques. The start date is negotiable, with students who are completing their degree this semester/term welcome to apply.
