About the Project

2D materials have seen an explosion of research since the isolation of graphene in 2004. Transition metal dichalcogenides are one class of 2D materials which have the formula MX2 where M is the transition metal and X is the chalcogen (S, Se or Te). These materials have a wide variety of electronic properties including semiconducting, metallic, charge density wave and superconductivity.

A recent development in the area of 2D materials is the use of ionic liquid gating techniques. Ionic liquids are molten salts at room temperature and consist of bulky anions and cations. These liquids can be used in conjunction with certain 2D materials to highly dope of the 2D material and ‘supe-up’ the material into the superconducting state.

This PhD is concerned with manipulating the electronic properties of 2D materials with ionic liquid gating techniques. The project will look to create new superconducting 2D materials as well as understanding the processes behind ionic liquid gating. The PhD candidate will have access to clean room facilities and receive training in lithographic fabrication techniques. This is an interdisciplinary project and the student will be expected to work with project partners in both physics and chemistry.

Successful applicants will ideally have graduated (or be due to graduate) with an undergraduate Masters first class degree and/or MSc distinction (or overseas equivalent). English language requirements must be met at the time of application to be considered for funding.

Funding Notes

UK and EU students applying for this project may be considered for a University Research Studentship which will cover Home/EU tuition fees, a training support fee of £1,000 per annum and a tax-free maintenance allowance at the RCUK Doctoral Stipend rate (£14,553 in 2017-18) for a period of up to 3 years.

Note: ONLY UK and EU applicants are eligible for this studentship; unfortunately, applicants who are classed as Overseas for fee paying purposes are NOT eligible for funding.
