About the Project

International organizations (especially the United Nations and the European Union) have increasingly taken on a central role in the mediation of violent intra-state conflict. This PhD will explore the strategies employed by such external actors in mediating the end of ethnic conflict and civil war. Exploring the effectiveness of international mediation in deeply divided societies, the PhD will potentially make important contributions to theories of mediation and conflict resolution. It will also likely have potential policy implications in relation to understanding ‘what works’ when international mediators seek to put an end to civil conflict and help transition a state to stable democracy and sustainable peace.
