About the Project

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in terahertz plasmonics, starting in October 2018. The work will be based in the Optical and Semiconductor Devices group in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London. The student will be supervised by Dr Oleksiy Sydoruk.

All terahertz systems require a source, which then largely defines its capabilities and limitations. A novel practical low-cost source would have a profound impact both on academic research and industrial applications. This theoretical project will aim to design terahertz sources based on interaction of plasmons with dc currents in low-dimensional semiconductor systems. The student will develop analytical and numerical models for terahertz generation and will have an opportunity to be involved in cross-institutional collaboration between theoretical and experimental research groups.

The successful candidate will have (or be expected to obtain) a first-class (or equivalent) Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline and have a strong background in electromagnetic theory. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in plasmonics, metamaterials, device modelling and simulation.

Applications should be made online following the standard procedure (http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/pgprospectus/howtoapply) and specifying Dr Sydoruk as the supervisor. Applications will be shortlisted for interviews in early February 2018.

Further description of the group’s terahertz projects can be found here http://www.imperial.ac.uk/electrical-engineering/research/optical-and-semiconductor-devices/research/terahertz/. Prospective candidates may contact Dr Oleksiy Sydoruk ([Email Address Removed]) directly for further details.

Closing date for applications: 31st of January 2018
Start Date: 1st of October 2018.

Funding Notes

The studentship provides a (tax-free) bursary of £16,553 (Standard RCUK Bursary rate) per annum for up to 3.5 years and will cover full College tuition fees for 3 years. There is no restriction on applicants’ nationality.
