Storytelling Dashboards for Cognitive Business Intelligence


Project Description

Psychology research shows that people comprehend information more affectively when it is communicated to them as a story – presented as text linked to visuals. Most businesses, who have been investing heavily into Business Intelligence (BI), learnt through experience that insightful stories presented in language and visuals are essential to affective BI platforms. The current BI platforms, on the other hand place the burden on the business user to interpret the visual-only information into the required story. In practice this means, business users are required to spend significant amounts of time sifting through complex and often cluttered visual dashboards to glean the required information. This in turn means businesses slowdown in realizing the benefits of BI.

This PhD project investigates natural language generation (NLG) techniques that affectively complement the existing dashboard technology to offer what are called Storytelling Dashboards. These storytelling dashboards will be evaluated to show that they enable the business user to get to the main story of the underlying data in quick time and help them to avoid cognitive biases while making business decisions. This PhD project will focus on the finance domain, (in its broad sense of accounting and finance as well financial services), where BI platforms are quite common. Ideally candidates applying for this PhD should have an interest in cognitive science and human computer interaction so that user-centric solutions are explored.

The successful candidate will have or expect to have a fUK Honours Degree at 2.1 (or equivalent) in Computing Science or related disciplines.

Essential background: data science, information visualization, business intelligence, data modelling, programming in Java, Python or R.
Desirable knowledge: human computer interaction (HCI), psychology, experimental research methods.
