About the Project

Walter Scott’s poetry has received relatively little critical attention in recent years. However, with a new critical edition in preparation at the University of Aberdeen there is likely to be renewed interest in it. The significance of Scott to how we consider landscape and place is, on the face of it, well documented but the opportunity to revisit this knowledge in relation to his poetry offers new critical possibilities. This project invites applications for a doctoral project on the role of place and space in Walter Scott’s long narrative poems. Students undertaking this project will be supported by the work of the Walter Scott Research Centre at the University of Aberdeen.

Candidates should apply for a PhD place in the normal way, stating:
o ‘Elphinstone PhD Scholarship’ in the Intended Source of Funding section
o The name of the lead supervisor in the Name of Proposed Supervisor section
o The title of the specific research project in the Outline Summary section

Funding Notes

This project is funded by a University of Aberdeen Elphinstone Scholarship. An Elphinstone Scholarship covers the cost of tuition fees, whether Home, EU or Overseas.

Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit.
