About the Project

DNA topoisomerase VI is an enzyme that was originally discovered in archaea but has more recently been found in plants (Arabidopsis thaliana) and malaria parasites (Plasmodium falciparum). Rather little is known about this enzyme but it has key roles in plant growth and development and in the plasmodium life cycle. Working in partnership with Syngenta (Jealott’s Hill, UK) we will characterise this enzyme and learn more about the reactions that it catalyses and its role in plants and plasmodia. We will go on to develop inhibitors of the enzyme, specifically we aim to screen libraries of compounds and investigate the mechanism of action of compounds that are found to inhibit the enzyme. We aim to develop new leads for herbicides and antimalarial therapy.

This Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NRPDTP) Industrial CASE studentship offers postgraduates the opportunity to undertake a 4-year research project whilst enhancing professional development and research skills through a comprehensive training programme; this includes a placement (at least 3 months) with Syngenta. You will join a vibrant community of world-leading researchers. Students with, or expecting to attain, at least an upper second-class honours degree, or equivalent, are invited to apply.

Funding Notes

Studentship covers a stipend (£18,053pa; RCUK 17/18 rate: £14,553pa + £3000pa CASE enhancement), research costs and tuition fees at UK/EU rate, and are available to UK/EU students who meet the UK residency requirements.

Students from EU countries who do not meet the UK residency requirements may be eligible for a fees-only award. Students in receipt of a fees-only award will be eligible for a maintenance stipend awarded by the NRPDTP Bioscience Doctoral Scholarships, which when combined will equal a full studentship. To be eligible students must meet the EU residency requirements.
