About the Project

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues (gingiva, connective tissues and alveolar bone) and has been previously associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). However, traditional periodontal treatment, aimed at reducing the oral microbiota, has not been successful in decreasing the occurrence of APOs. Since inflammation is the underlying cause of APOs, there is a critical need to evaluate alternative periodontal therapies that will directly address the uncontrolled inflammation caused by the microbial dysbiosis observed in periodontitis. Natural mediators of resolution (i.e. Resolvins) are receptor agonists that reduce inflammatory exudates and are known to initiate resolution in both oral and systemic inflammation. This PhD project will aim to determine the mechanisms behind the link between periodontal dysbiosis and APOs; and to explore the inflammation-regulatory actions of resolution mediators in APOs using experimental mouse models of periodontal disease.
