Project Detail:
This PhD is concerned with developing new techniques to improve the accuracy of augmented reality (AR) in engineering applications. In current AR applications, special markers are placed in the real-world and recognised through image processing techniques to place computer generated text or graphics over the real-world. Unfortunately, the real-world - virtual-world interface is not very accurate. This PhD project is concerned with developing new techniques that will enable space stabilised, accurately scaled and located AR engineering data to be displayed with respect to the real-world. In this application we are assuming the use of tablet computer based AR where the camera on the tablet computer is used to capture the real-world in conjunction with the spatial markers. We anticipate that new spatial markers will be developed by the research so that they contain additional information such as links to relevant contextual engineering data. The research will involve investigating the science behind AR from a technology and human factors perspective to achieve the required level of accuracy.

There are many engineering related applications that would benefit from solutions to the above research.

We already have an industry partner who would provide suitable industry inspired proof of concept case studies for the research.
This is an extremely exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of what will become a crucial technological concept for future engineering Industry 4.0 applications.

Entry requirements:
Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in computer science or a related subject. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: systems engineering, image processing or product design.

Funding Notes

Please note that these studentships will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who have applied to this project and/or the following 30 projects that have been prioritised for funding; advert ref: WS01 – WS30

If awarded, each 3 year studentship will provide a tax-free stipend of £14,786 p.a ( provisional), plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate (currently £4,262 p.a). While we welcome applications from non EU nationals, please be advised that due to funding restrictions it will only be possible to fund the tuition fees at the international rate and no stipend will be available. Successful candidates will be notified by 30th April 2018.
