About the Project

Grid integration of renewable energy sources are one of the main driving forces of current growth in the electric power industry, particularly in the UK. Renewable energy has also brought new challenges in this sector. One such challenge is the intermittent nature of renewable energy. The maximum available power output of renewable energy sources like Solar, Wind, Tide etc. are weather dependent. To efficiently operate these systems, engineers prefer them to operate in the maximum power point mode which is known as maximum power point tracking (MPPT).

Tremendous growth have been observed in this area in the last decade. Lots of results are available in this area. However, most of the results focus on normal weather condition. However due to global warming and lot of other factors, frequently harsh weather situation can be observed. As a result, new research works are needed to tackle the problem of MPPT in harsh weather conditions.

Few results are available for MPPT in harsh conditions. Most of them lack proper theoretical foundation and often relies on approaches based on heuristics. As a result, there are no guarantees that those techniques will work in practice. So, the main focus of this PhD work will be to propose novel techniques for MPPT in harsh conditions that are theoretically elegant while at the same time practically useful.

Entry Requirements
• A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the Project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average.
• the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a three-year period of study
- English language proficiency (an overall minimum Academic IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each of the four components).
• knowledge and/or experience in the subject
• a good knowledge of control engineering and power electronics
• experience of (or a willingness to quickly learn) about scientific writing
