About the Project

Highly motivated and ambitious candidates are invited to apply for a fully-funded PhD studentship in the Miras Group at the School of Chemistry, University of Glasgow (https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/chemistry/staff/charalamposmoiras/ ). The vacancy is open now, for starts not later than October 2018. The work will include aspects of self-assembly, thiometalate, polyoxometalate, supramolecular chemistry, high-pressure/temperature synthesis, electrochemistry, chemical, structural and surface characterization. Candidates should hold (or expect to hold by the start date) a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc / MChem / BSc or equivalent in a relevant discipline (chemistry, materials, etc.). Practical experience in inorganic synthesis is expected, and experience in catalysis, supramolecular chemistry and/or programming knowledge in Python will be an advantage. Above all, candidates will be highly motivated and independently-minded, and should be able to demonstrate the ability to learn new skills in a research environment.

The PhD scholar will exploit a timely opportunity to implement new methodologies developed in Miras group to tailor electronic and catalytic properties of molecular and 2D materials using directed self-assembly approaches for accessing a host of artificial heterostructures with potential applications ranging from electronic devices to hydrogen evolution catalysts. This research incorporates aspects from across chemistry, involving synthesis, characterization and analysis. Opportunities will also be available for travel to national and international conferences to present research results as well opportunities to cross the disciplinary boundaries by working together with physicists and engineers

Candidates should hold (or expect to hold by the start date) a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc / MChem / BSc or equivalent in a relevant discipline (chemistry, materials, etc.).

Funding Notes

Funding is available to cover tuition fees for UK/EU applicants for 3.5 years, as well as paying a stipend at the Research Council rate (estimated £14,553 for Session 2017-18).
