Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Applications are invited for a Postgraduate Research studentship at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, UWE Bristol.
The project will be undertaken within the Robotics Engineering and Computing for Healthcare Group at Bristol Robotics Laboratory. The studentship is funded by the Above and Beyond, the local charity raising funds for Bristol City Centre hospitals.
The successful applicant will work closely with clinical leads from Bristol Royal Infirmary, Professors Bahl and Persad and the research team at Bristol Robotics Laboratory led by Professor Sanja Dogramadzi.
The position is available to start in April 2018 (or earlier by agreement).
Background of the project
Brachytherapy is a specialised form of radiotherapy which involves placement of a radioactive isotope directly into a tumour. It has the advantage over conventional radiotherapy of delivering high levels of radiation to the tumour whilst giving lower doses to healthy surrounding tissues. Brachytherapy to the prostate gland requires manual placement of applicators by a consultant oncologist, guided by ultrasound imaging.
Utilising robotic technologies can provide stable image acquisition and automated applicator placement to allow for more accurate and precise brachytherapy treatment.
The two PhD projects will focus on 3D imaging systems for brachytherapy of prostate cancer and improving tracking and positioning of the applicators in real time and with the respect to the prostate gland.
Funding details
This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the Home/EU tuition fee rate plus a maintenance allowance of £15,500 in 2017/18.
Eligibility criteria
This opportunity is only available to UK/EU applicants.
Person specification
The successful applicants should have a first-class or upper second-class honours degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science or Engineering or a related degree, with a keen interest in robotics. However, prior knowledge of medical robotics or, more specifically, brachytherapy is not essential as training will be incorporated within the PhD programme. Preferred skill requirements include knowledge/experience of image processing, mechanical design and control engineering. The applicants should have a master’s degree in one of the relevant subjects.
