About the Project

Debris flows are intense erosion events in which flash floods in steep gullies/ravines pick up large quantities of soil and rock, which is then deposited downstream. Once begun, the large rocks in a debris flow act to break up the stream bed, allowing the flow to pick up more sediment as it goes. In some topographies debris flows are thought to be a principle factor in long-term rates of erosion.

This project will model the effect of debris flows on the transport of sediment along a connected river network, looking at how sediment is generated in steep gullies, then transported in bursts due to debris flows, as well as gradually by usual water flow. The aim is to produce a simulation model which will be fitted to recent data from a river network in China.

Funding Notes

UK Research Council eligibility conditions apply.
Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education.
