About the Project

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Integrated Tribology (iT-CDT), in collaboration with academic partner institutions in Canada and France, are offering a unique opportunity to work on this PhD project aimed at developing a comfort index for ear plugs.

The work at Sheffield will involve taking Optical Coherence Tomography measurements of the inner ear, building a realistic, synthetic ear test-bed and measuring the frictional interactions at play when inserting, wearing and removing ear plugs designed for hearing protection.

The PhD researcher will join a cohort of students within the CDT and work along side existing students starting Bio-Tribology projects, so a good support network is available. This exciting project will include international travel to France and Canada to spend time with collaborators and work at partner sites.

iT-CDT Students also benefit from the enhanced training the Centre offers, this includes advanced science and technology training designed to provide relevant tribology fundamentals to students with engineering and physical sciences background, bespoke professional and personal development programme, to equip students with transferable skills required for careers in both academia and industry and industry exposure through placements and impact projects with Centre sponsors.

The Centre also offers a generous enhanced stipend.
