About the Project

PhD in Microbiology
Resistance to multiple antibiotics in bacterial pathogens poses an immediate threat to public health, both in the UK and in the developing world. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop alternative strategies to combat multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Gram-negative species in particular are of particular concern, with E. coli alone causing 40,000 bloodstream infections and 5,000 deaths per year in England and Wales. Utilising our large collection of genetically diverse E. coli clinical isolates, the project will focus on how we can influence antibiotic tolerance by modulating respiratory metabolism of this pathogen. We will employ a broad range of approaches, including genetic manipulation, sequencing/genomics, bioinformatics, protein biochemistry, proteomics, antibiotic susceptibility testing and biofilm assays.

We are looking for a highly-motivated individual with a BSc degree in a bioscience-related topic. Practical experience with microbiology and molecular biology is essential, and experience in any of the above techniques is desirable.

THE CANDIDATE:
The successful candidate is expected to be a highly motivated student. He/she will be expected to have a minimum of an upper 2nd class degree in an appropriate field.

Funding Notes

The Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) provides a postgraduate research student with financial support in return for 96 hours per year of teaching. The stipend paid equals the full UK Research Council rate of £14,777 (rate for 2018/19) plus tuition fees at the home/EU rate. International applicants should make provision to meet the difference between Home /EU and International fees.
