About the Project

Computational modeling of the heart has evolved as a major research approach complementary to traditional wet-lab, animal, or clinical studies. Within the DFG-funded project SuLMaSS, we will advance our modeling framework for cardiac electrophysiology towards a sustainable research software in collaboration with the Steinbuch Computing Center and the Institute for Applied Materials at KIT, the KIT library and the Institute for Experimental Cardiovascular Medicine at the University Heart Center Freiburg-Bad Krozingen (UHZ).
Your tasks will include: needs analysis and requirements specification, software design, test-driven implementation, user documentation including production of video tutorials (in collaboration with the Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning (ZML) at KIT), engagement with the user community, coordination within the consortium.
Besides being part of this research software development effort, you will apply the software to answer clinically relevant questions in collaboration with our cardiologist partners at UHZ, Karlsruhe Hospital, and University Hospital Heidelberg. The primary PhD supervisor will be Prof. Olaf Dössel.

Personal qualification
You completed a university degree (Diploma/Master) in computer science, electrical engineering and information technology, mathematics, physics, or similar with above average grades and are motivated to pursue a doctorate. You have experience in software engineering using third-party libraries. Moreover, you are motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team, have good communication skills, a high written eloquence in English, and at least a B2 level of German or are willing to learn German during your first year.
In the best case, you have experience in modeling of cardiac electrophysiology, software design, software management, test-driven development, GUI development, software profiling and optimization, CellML, CVODE, myokit, NW.js (node-webkit), PETSc (DMPlex and PetscDS), or Sphinx/reST.
