About the Project

The Eden Phillpotts Memorial Scholarships are funded by the Eden Phillpotts Memorial Fund. These scholarships aim to support outstanding candidates to undertake PhD research at the University of Exeter in order to further the study of South West writing in any period. The South West in this context comprises Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Areas of research might include (but are not limited to): writers from the South West (e.g. S.T. Coleridge, Arthur Symons, Charles Causley, Agatha Christie); writers who were/are based in the South West, for at least significant periods of their career (e.g. William Golding, Hilary Mantel, Ted Hughes); or writers, including travel writers, who took/take the South West as the setting or inspiration for a particular work or works (e.g. J.R.R. Tolkien, Daphne Du Maurier, Virginia Woolf, Thomas Hardy).

The University of Exeter holds significant archival collections in the area of South West writing. For more information see: https://as.exeter.ac.uk/special-collections/ . There are also multiple opportunities to collaborate with local organisations and charities with links to the University to bring your work to a wider public. The successful candidates will be based on either the Penryn (Cornwall) or the Streatham (Exeter) campus of the University of Exeter, and may request a supervisor from either campus. Each of the successful candidates will be known as ‘PhD student in South West Writing’. The project is coordinated by Dr Kate Hext.
