About the Project

Train to be a future pioneer in dementia care research.

The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southampton, is offering a new PhD Studentship on the topic of risk enablement and patient safety, as part of the University of Southampton’s Doctoral Training Centre in Dementia Care (DTC-DC), funded by the Alzheimer’s Society.

The DTC-DC at the University of Southampton hosts several studies on topics related to enabling risk for people with dementia. Some are hospital based, while others are set in the community. Risk taking is an essential part of independence and being an active citizen, yet staying safe while still taking some risks is an under-researched area within all dementia care settings. With this studentship, you have the opportunity to develop an independent research project related to enabling risk and people with dementia.

Choosing to study at this centre will enhance your career prospects in respect of becoming a future pioneer in dementia care research, by strengthening your subject expertise, influence, and ability to research and mobilise knowledge. It will also provide rich opportunities for you to network and learn from others working in this field within the UK and beyond.

Your university fees will be paid and you will be provided with a generous individual budget for consumables, patient and public involvement (PPI) and research communication activities. You will have the opportunity to teach and take part in a range of campus events and public engagement initiatives, including the annual 3 Minute Thesis © research communication competition. You will become part of the Ageing and Dementia Research cluster group, which offers research seminars, peer support, and an intellectually stimulating environment in which to develop your ideas and foster sustainable networks and working relations.

We are seeking a motivated individual who has successfully achieved a 2:1 honours degree or higher, or University approved equivalent in a health related or social science subject.

Funding Notes

The studentship is for 3 years full time and will begin in September 2018. You will be supported by an annual £15,000 stipend and an additional annual sum of £1000 to support additional training and development costs during the candidature.
