About the Project

Funded by School of Engineering - Robert Gordon University offers this Fees-only PhD studentship for home and overseas candidates.

This is a fees-only funded PhD studentship within the School of Engineering at Robert Gordon University (RGU). The successful candidate will be based at RGU in Aberdeen and supervised by Dr Yafan Zhao and Dr Nazila Fough. Research is funded by the School of Engineering and interested candidates will have to secure their own financial support to upkeep their living costs.

Project Summary

The PhD study will focus on the development of a novel Quality of Experience method for measuring and monitoring streaming video quality and an integrated framework for improving users’ experience. This work is aimed to enable real-time evaluation and monitoring of Quality of Experience (QoE) and to improve the QoE for video streaming applications in a consistent and analytical framework.

Fast growing market of mobile internet devices, wide range of multimedia applications has increased the user’ expectation for quick access to the high quality video content. However, the delivery of high quality video over the internet (including video streaming, real-time video communication, video sharing, and game streaming) under the current infrastructure has become the challenge in last few years. Quality of Experience (QoE) captures users’ satisfaction level of the transmitted video and therefore can be used to improve the quality of the multimedia applications.

The most accurate and reliable approach to the QoE evaluation is to collect users’ subjective opinion about the quality of the streaming video. However, this direct study of users’ opinion is time-consuming and expensive and cannot be applied in real-time applications to provide instant measurement. Therefore, an efficient and effective objective QoE evaluation approach is essential to enable efficient real-time QoE measurement and improvement of video streaming services and systems.

This project will build on our research experience on Objective Quality metrics for video quality measurement, video transport protocol and networks. The development will be carried out by the successful PhD applicant and the supervision team will provide the technical guidance, steer the development of key concepts and ensure the achievement of project objectives and novel contributions.

Robert Gordon University is one of the top modern universities in Scotland for engineering research, with a track record of dynamic leadership and a reputation as an innovative and ambitious university.
