About the Project

Our ability to produce accurate predictions of hydraulic systems (from pipes and engineered channels to complex environmental flows) is naturally bounded by the precision of the models we employ. The latter, in turn, is ultimately related to the accuracy of our observations in laboratory and in field. Undoubtedly, much progress has been achieved in the last decades on the development of new measurement techniques in fluid dynamics, but some challenges still remain – direct, non-intrusive measurement of local pressure is one such example.

This PhD project aims at developing novel measurement techniques, based on experimental technologies well established in optical metrology (e.g. optical resonators). The measurement schemes we aim to develop will be applied to complex problems in environmental hydraulics in particular and fluid dynamics in general.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant and very strong department in Civil Engineering (ranked 2nd in the UK), and will have access to state-of-the-art facilities. Collaboration with world-leading experts in the field of high-precision experimental fluid dynamics and optical technologies (see https://www.orc.soton.ac.uk/) is foreseen. The aspirant must have a degree in Engineering, Physics or related discipline. Previous experience with experimental research (particularly if employing optical techniques) and a strong background in fluid dynamics are advantageous. Enthusiasm for research, ability to think and work independently and excellent analytical skills are critical requirements.

Funding covers tuition fees at UK/EU rates and a maintenance stipend of approximately £14.5k per year. Applications from overseas students are welcome, but the applicant must be able to cover the difference between UK/EU and Overseas tuition fees (~£17k p.a.) - otherwise, application is not encouraged. Estimated start date is September 2018.
