About the Project
Applications are invited for a one-year Masters by Research studentship in Operations Management at the Bangor Business School, Bangor University. The studentship is funded by the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS 2) http://kess2.ac.uk/ in collaboration with Carl Kammerling International. It will cover tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend at the standard RCUK rate (around £11k per year), as well as a travel budget for workshops and conference attendance. The studentship is available immediately.
Project outline:
Business Forecasting involves technical knowledge of Statistics, Psychology and Information Systems and such a multidisciplinary project is always challenging to address. For the company this is a great challenge as there is a need for knowledge transfer from an HEI with expertise in the area. For the student, the multidisciplinary nature necessitates the use of different skills, and for the supervision this is also a challenge.
This KESS 2 project involves conducting a full review of the following two functions in the company:
- Demand Forecasting
- Inventory & Stock Control Management
A comprehensive report of recommendations will then be produced for improvement in the short term. This will be followed by the development of prototype MS Excel- based solutions for improved demand forecasting and stock control.
The project will oversee the application of this tool in parallel with existing SOPs and monitoring: that means that the newly proposed tools will run in parallel with the existing solution. After a period of 4-12 weeks the two alternatives will be assesses and a decision will be taken for the switch of the existing status quo to the new processes given the anticipated benefits.

Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS 2) is a pan-Wales higher level skills initiative led by Bangor University on behalf of the HE sector in Wales. It is part funded by the Welsh Government’s European Social Fund (ESF) convergence programme for West Wales and the Valleys.
Due to ESF funding, eligibility restrictions apply to this scholarship. To be eligible, the successful candidate will need to be resident in the Convergence Area of Wales on University registration, and must have the right to work in the region on qualification.
