About the Project

Airports are facing unprecedented growth in passenger numbers and are crucial to national economies. This upwards movement in passenger and flight traffic is putting increasing pressure on airports as their management systems and infrastructure aim to cope with increased passenger throughput. They need to operate in smarter ways rather than purely increasing in size in order to sustain their role as gateways to cities, regions or entire countries. Airports face increasing competition and now aim to provide positive impressions and new customer experiences in addition to acting in their core capacity of enabling passenger transport. All of this must be achieved against a background where security is of paramount importance, considering not only passengers and infrastructure but all of the systems and processes that support airport operations.

This project will consider the implementation of a facilities management framework to enable smarter airport development and operation and may take account of passenger and baggage throughput, considering smart airport technologies and their integration into airport infrastructure and management. Security issues and customer satisfaction will also be central themes.

Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit. Applicants should submit a more detailed proposal that expands on the broad outline given above. This should address specifically how the key challenges of the topic area will be approached.

Academic qualifications
A first degree (at least a 2.1) ideally in a built environment, management or computing discipline with a good fundamental knowledge of facilities management.

English language requirement

Essential attributes:
• Experience of fundamental research data analysis.
• Competent in applying a range of research methodologies.
• Knowledge of facilities management process.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Strong motivation, with evidence of independent research skills relevant to the project.
• Good time management

Desirable attributes:
Ability to think critically and work as part of an academic team.
