About the Project

In this project, passive heave compensation system in offshore cranes are investigated. An integrated model will be developed by which heave amplitude in various sea states can be computed. Thereafter the Isolation Spring Compensator System (ISCS) for heave isolation is modelled as a variable structure device attached to the winch.

The control strategy herein regulates the parameters of the passive system for maximum heave isolation. The main part is feasibility study of the system to find if it can be a mobile device connected to the hook and lowered with the load. The details of the pressure regulation etc. will be investigated by the student who is recruited for the project.

The case in which the passive system is installed on the vessel deck should also be investigated and designed. The student is also responsible for development of variable control model such that crane could operate an various sea states and environment i.e. Brazil, Golf of Mexico, North Sea etc.. To ensure the accuracy of the developed model, the student should learn the Orcaflex software to verify the isolation capability of the passive system via the software.

The successful candidate should have (or expect to achieve) a minimum of a UK Honours degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or subsea or related subject.

Essential Background in Ocean wave mechanics, computer programming , Control System

Knowledge of: Familiar with system modelling via ODE,s and also a computer language (preferably MATLAB)
