Theme: Future Cities
Summary of the research project:
Research of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in construction often focuses on of clients and Tier 1 contractors, exploring the processes that help generate, evidence and better understand organisational commitments to CSR in practice. Despite the fact that the construction industry frequently employs long and complex supply chains, research of CSR within this context is more limited: whilst work has been carried out examining the upstream pressures for SMEs to contribute to client CSR strategies, research examining CSR as it flows downstream is lacking. Questions have been raised as to the effectiveness of some CSR ventures in practice. For example, when a worker health CSR initiative is championed by Tier 1 contractors, does it cascade along all these supply chains? Are all those who actually contribute to the project able to benefit?
This project seeks to explore how CSR actually works along construction supply chains.
In particular the project will:
• Produce a state-of-the-art review of CSR in the construction industry.
• Determine how CSR and its initiatives are transferred along industry supply chains.
• Determine which CSR initiatives transfer most readily and which become ‘stuck’ along supply chains.
• Develop industry-relevant guidance as to the most effective CSR initiatives for construction project and framework supply chains.
This will be achieved by a comprehensive literature review, examining CSR implementation in other industry sectors (such as automotive) where supply chains are also employed but in more rigid forms, as well as establish the state-of –the-art of CSR implementation and initiatives in the construction industry. Empirical work will involve collection of both qualitative and quantitative data to explore both the process of CSR transference along supply chains as well as the relative effectiveness of common CSR initiatives. Purposive sampling to ensure representation from Tier 1, 2 and 3 contractors and suppliers and analysed to explore differences in the levels of dissemination of CSR and to determine a ‘hierarchy’ of effectiveness in practice. Such insights, supported by empirical data, will be able to determine the most effective CSR initiatives for the construction industry, and facilitate true corporate citizenship in practice.
