About the Project

Modern methods of designing moment-resisting end-plate beam-column connections (for example [1]) make use of plastic redistribution concepts in defining the strength of the joint at the Ultimate Limit State. The methods are experimentally validated and are expressed in accessible algorithmic form which commends them to the use of the Structural Engineer.

However, what is missing from these methods is a consideration of the influence of the early onset of partial plastic behaviour on the deformation of the joint at the Serviceability Limit State (SLS). Whether the standard calculation of SLS deflections is affected (that is, rendered non-conservative) by partial development of plasticity is not addressed in these methods. This project aims to carry out an extensive non-linear finite element parametric study into a whole range of joint geometries - backed up by physical experiments - to explore this aspect of the joints’ behaviour, with a view to plugging the gap in the information and guidance available to the Structural Engineer.

The successful candidate should have (or expect to achieve) a minimum of a UK Honours degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Civil, Structural or Civil and Structural Engineering.

Essential Background: Civil or Civil and Structural Engineering.

Knowledge: Structural Steelwork; Design Codes of Practice for Structural Steelwork (Eurocode 3 preferably, but not essential); Finite Element analysis; Stress Analysis.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Formal applications can be completed online: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply. You should apply for Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering, to ensure that your application is passed to the correct person for processing.

NOTE CLEARLY THE NAME OF THE SUPERVISOR AND EXACT PROJECT TITLE YOU WISH TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ON THE APPLICATION FORM.

Informal inquiries can be made to Dr P Davidson ([Email Address Removed]) with a copy of your curriculum vitae and cover letter. All general enquiries should be directed to the Postgraduate Research School ([Email Address Removed]).

Funding Notes

There is no funding attached to this project. It is for self-funded students only.
