Overview:
The National Health Service is an organisation undergoing significant restructuring. Models of care are changing in response to an ageing population, placing increasing demands and financial pressures on NHS services.
This PhD programme will look at existing surgical care pathways for patients and identify target areas where greater cross-speciality integration between primary and secondary care could improve surgical outcomes. It will explore the vulnerabilities in existing pathways, including data gaps and inconsistencies. It will involve the development, implementation and evaluation of new models of care to ultimately improve the quality and safety of care provided to surgical patients.
This project represents an exciting opportunity to work alongside a leading academic in patient safety and health information technology (Dr Sarah Slight) and an experienced consultant thoracic surgeon (Mr Robert D Slight). The PhD student will be based at the School of Pharmacy, Newcastle University, which is led by Professor Andrew Husband, and be provided with the necessary support and training in both qualitative and quantitative methods.
The PhD programme of work will be conducted at the Freeman Hospital and Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle. There are excellent working relationships in place with physicians and allied healthcare professionals across both sites, thus ensuring that the successful student has access to significant expertise and data sources.

Eligibility Criteria:
You must have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree in a relevant subject area. A further qualification such as an MSc or MRes is advantageous.
This award is available to UK/EU and international applicants.
To study this course you need to meet the following English Language requirements: IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in all other sub-skills).

Funding Notes
100% of UK/EU tuition fees paid and annual living expenses of £14,777 (full award). Successful international candidates will be required to make up the difference between the UK/EU fees and international fees.
