About the Project

Physical development and the concept of physical literacy are increasingly popular concepts within both the academic and professional world of PE and school sport. Furthermore, in an era where health and sedentary lifestyles are of increasing societal concern (DoH 2004; WHO 2010), it is important that we explore young people’s physical development and the impact this can have on their engagement with Physical Education (PE) and physical activity (PA).

This research looks to develop our knowledge and understanding of the relationship between poor physical development and attitudes towards/participation in Physical Education and or physical activity within a secondary school context. Previous research has suggested a decline in participation levels and attitudes towards PE, taking shape as early as primary school but becoming more pronounced in secondary school (WSFF, 2012). Girls’ disengagement and issues around barriers, male domination and activity choices, have dominated this research (Gorely et al, 2003; Green, 2004; Rich, 2004; WSFF, 2012). The purpose of this PhD is to explore the impact of poor physical development on young people’s attitudes towards and participation levels in PE/PA.
