About the Project

The School of Engineering of the University of Glasgow is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake an exciting 3.5 year PhD project entitled ‘Orbit and attitude control strategies for micro-space systems’. The successful candidate will join a team pursuing a long-term programme of research on Emerging Space Technologies associated with Professor McInnes’ Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies: Space. The programme of research will devise, develop and demonstrate a range of exciting new space technologies for the future.

The project will undertake modelling, simulation and bread-boarding of new concepts to exploit the physics of the space environment to enable active orbit and attitude control of centimetre-scale spacecraft. A key task will be to fully understand the envelope of the design space for such devices using a range of physical scaling laws. Then, in order to investigate control strategies for such devices in simulation, sensor and actuator models will be developed to assess pointing and positioning accuracy. Both passive and active control strategies will be devised. An instrumented laboratory-scale demonstrator will be developed as a step towards future in-orbit demonstration opportunities.

Candidates should have a strong interest in mathematical modelling and an aptitude to engage in experimental research. Prior experience of orbit/attitude dynamics and MATLAB would be welcome.

For an informal discussion or for further information on this project, potential applicants are encouraged to contact: Professor Colin McInnes ([Email Address Removed]).

Funding Notes

The studentship is supported by the College of Science and Engineering, School of Engineering, and it will cover home tuition fees and provide a stipend of £14,777 per annum for 3.5 years.
