About the Project

Start date: 1st October 2018

A fully funded 4-year DPhil position is available in the Oxford Colloid Group (http://colloid.chem.ox.ac.uk), which is run by Profs Dirk Aarts and Roel Dullens. The project, sponsored by Syngenta and EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) through an iCASE award, aims to understand the visco-elastic properties of colloidal gels, which are made up of model colloidal particles and a range of colloidal and polymeric thickening agents. The work will combine experiments, primarily rheology and microscopy, with some modelling and theoretical aspects. The work ties in to one of this century’s major societal challenges of global food security through increases in food supply.

Syngenta is a leading agriculture company helping to improve global food security by enabling millions of farmers to make better use of available resources. Through world class science and innovative crop solutions, our 28,000 people in over 90 countries are working to transform how crops are grown. We are committed to rescuing land from degradation, enhancing biodiversity and revitalising rural communities. To learn more visit www.syngenta.com and www.goodgrowthplan.com .

The candidate is expected to have a strong interest in soft condensed matter, and should be keen to work in collaboration with industry. Experience in colloid chemistry and rheology would be an advantage. The candidate should also have II:1 or above in their first degree or higher degree in Chemistry, or a related science discipline.

This studentship will cover College and University fees at Home rate plus provide a stipend of no less than the standard UK Research Council rate, currently set at £14,777 per year for up to four years. EPSRC eligibility criteria apply (https://epsrc.ukri.org/skills/students/help/eligibility/). EU nationals who do not meet the EPSRC residence criteria can contact Aga Borkowska, Graduate Studies Administrator ([Email Address Removed] ) to check their eligibility for EPSRC funding, before submitting a formal application.

You will be required to submit a formal application for DPhil in Physical & Theoretical Chemistry

Application deadline: 12.00noon UK time on Friday, 1st June 2018
