About the Project

This PhD will use mixed methods to investigate the impact of mobile technology usage on executive function, and explore the relationship between screen time and sleep within a real world context. It will involve a variety of techniques including observational epidemiology, lab-based experimental studies and qualitative work.
Aims
This PhD will combine different methodologies to inform study design and objectively assess the effect of increased mobile screen time on executive function using the following aims:
1. Conduct a systematic review of the literature on studies which have assessed the impact of mobile technology with a primary outcome measure of executive functioning.
2. Use a large cohort study (Millennium cohort study: MCS) to investigate associations between screen time and various outcomes (physical activity, mental health, sleep), and the impact of confounding on these associations.
3. Experimentally investigate the impact of mobile technology on executive function with excessive mobile phone users compared to low mobile phone users.
4. Investigate the impact of mobile technology on sleep, using focus groups and qualitative techniques.
This project will be suited to individuals who have studied psychology or epidemiology, and have an interest in the impact of technology on health behaviours and impulsivity / general executive functioning.
