Applications are invited for a three-year research PhD studentship in developing and applying a toolkit for climate change mitigation at the School of Environment, Natural Resources & Geography, Bangor University, UK. The studentship is funded by the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS 2) (http://kess2.ac.uk/) in collaboration with the National Trust Wales (NTW). It will cover tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend at the standard RCUK rate (£14,448 per year), as well as a travel budget for workshop and conference attendance. The studentship is available from 3rd September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.
In order to develop a sustainable and competitive business it is important that businesses are resilient to climate change. This project will generate tools for assessing where vulnerability exists and identify appropriate adaptation measures. The project will use the new UKCP18 data to identify key functions (e.g. site exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity) and determine the vulnerability of selected NTW sites as case studies for wider application. While the development of the adaptation toolkit will focus on NTW sites it will also be applicable to a wide range of similar sites and locations not managed by the NTW. The UKCP18 data will be a substantial update on the existing UKCP09 data updated to include the most recent predictions from the IPCC 5th assessment report. Specific enhancements relevant to this PhD are an increased spatial resolution to 2.2 km and increased temporal resolution to hourly. This enables an increased capture of potential increased extreme weather events including localised heavy rainfall events and incremental change trends. The project will also provide 20 plausible climate futures allowing the exploration of a range of scenarios
It is expected that as part of the PhD programme the successful candidate will:
• Review existing adaptation toolkits such as those used by RSPB and Historic Environment Scotland and consider which elements can be applied to National Trust in Wales.
• Use National Trust sites in Wales as case studies for estimating the effect of climate change exposure on three area types (built, coastal and countryside)
• Estimate the sensitivity of NTW sites to the change in climate change exposure
• Estimate the overall vulnerability, taking into account adaptive capacity NTW.
Applicants should hold a first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in environmental science or management, geography, or a related degree with experience of GIS. Knowledge of climate change scenarios is desirable. As well as modelling the effect of climate change the successful candidate will need to engage with public bodies and NGOs. Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS 2) is a pan-Wales higher level skills initiative led by Bangor University on behalf of the HE sector in Wales. It is part funded by the Welsh Government’s European Social Fund (ESF) convergence programme for West Wales and the Valleys.
Due to ESF funding, eligibility restrictions apply to this scholarship. To be eligible, the successful candidate will need to be resident in the Convergence Area of Wales on University registration, and must have the right to work in the region on qualification.
