About the Project

This project will focus on HTC process water treatment for the design and improvement of a renewable fuel production process. Research will explore novel approaches to improve the HTC process by manipulating process water properties for re-introduction into the HTC feed. Focus will be placed on the organic contents of the process water including the COD, BOD and TOC in order to maximise the energy yield of the feedstock material. Methods for lowering the wastewater COD levels may include flotation, filtering, biological water treatment systems, reverse and forward osmosis, and ultrasound. Maximising the energy potential of the feedstock materials requires in depth analysis of the process water as 20% of the initial carbon may be contained in this fraction. Recovery of COD and subsequent recycling therefore needs to be investigated to optimise carbon conversion into the solid fuel product.

Company Background:
This project is part funded by Antaco. Antaco has pioneered an innovative, organic waste management solution that is able to convert organic waste efficiently into a carbon neutral solid biofuel. Inventive and forward-thinking, we pride ourselves on doing things differently, and achieving notable results. Antaco is amongst the highest achieving Cleantech companies in the UK, having been voted top UK and EU Cleantech start-up by Climate-KIC and the European Institute of Technology and Innovation.
