The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) has funded the ‘Personal experience as a recovery resource in psychosis: Narrative Experiences ONline (NEON)’ Study. NEON started in August 2017 and will run until April 2022. We are now looking for a software engineer to support the remainder of programme, and to lead the implementation of a prototype technology to be used in a clinical trial. The post would suit a recent graduate from a technical discipline (including applicants graduating in the summer of 2018). It would also suit graduates with substantial experience in producing working digital technologies. The appointed candidate can optionally access a funded PhD studentship with work on the programme structured to support PhD completion. We also welcome candidates who have already completed their PhD, or those who are close to completing corrections. The post-holder will require demonstrable competence in developing working digital technologies.

The post-holder will have a substantial opportunity to further develop their competence with a broad range of current digital technologies, including technologies for managing digital content, the use of machine-learning algorithms to match content to the needs of users, and the use of databases to track user interactions. Their work will be guided by Dr.Jeroen Keppens (Kings College London) who is a specialist in artificial intelligence (AI). Their line manager will be Dr. Stefan Rennick-Egglestone, who is a healthcare technology researcher.

The post-holder will join the School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The post is located in the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), which is a partnership between University of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, to promote research excellence and its implementation in health and social care. The IMH currently manages £37.6 million in external research grants, with over 100 PhD students, and publication of 400 peer-reviewed journal papers per year.

The post-holder will become a member of the Recovery Research Team at the IMH. This is led by Professor Mike Slade, with a focus on developing theoretically-defensible and empirically-tested approaches to supporting recovery in mental health, using mixed-methods research designs (see researchintorecovery.com). The team co-ordinates the international Recovery Research Network and organises the Refocus on Recovery conferences, the field’s largest regular scientific meeting.
