About the Project

Lack of understanding of the noise produced by marine construction works results in significant workload for both the regulator and developer. It can also result in an inaccurate assessment of the impact of the work, both positive and negative.

In order to improve that understanding this project will evaluate the collation of data on, and the assessment of, the effect of the noise created during offshore activity, such as marine survey and installation works. This will include the exploration of better using existing techniques, and the development and testing of new ones, to quantify characteristics such as directionality of various noise sources and the effects of distance thereon.

Various underwater noise-measurement methods are already in use, and these will be examined to either modify the basic technique, or better exploit the existing data for this challenge. In parallel, the use of techniques used successfully in other sectors will be evaluated for use underwater. An example of the latter is the beam-forming and source-location techniques using phase arrays for the characterisation and source of noise emanating from aeroplanes, both in wind tunnel and flight testing. The project thus combine data analytics, instrumentation development and in-situ testing.
Additional co-supervision will be provided by Dr. Denise Risch of SAMS UHI.

Other project collaborators include Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission – part of SSEN.

Students must be domiciled in the Highlands and Islands region during the course of their study to be eligible for funding. Students are expected to be based full-time at Inverness College UHI.

The project is expected to start 1 October 2018.

Applicants must possess a minimum of an Honours degree at 2:1 and/or a Master’s Degree (or International equivalent) in a relevant subject.

Funding Notes

This project is supported by the European Union’s INTERREG VA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The studentship covers fees, plus a stipend at the RCUK level, for a total of 39 months (including writing-up).

Funding is available for students worldwide, however non UK/EU students will be liable for the difference between home/EU and international fees. Our current fees can be found here: https://www.uhi.ac.uk/en/studying-at-uhi/first-steps/how-much-will-it-cost/research-postgraduate-tuition-fees/
