About the Project

PhD Scholarship for UK or EU applicants in the field of: Mechanical Engineering

This PhD project is a collaboration between College of Engineering, Swansea University and STG Aerospace to design and develop the next generation of energy saving photoluminescent safety products for the aerospace industry. Current STG Aerospace products are market leading and are installed in over 10,000 aircraft, but to expand and improve this technology, the challenges of handling photoluminescent particles must be addressed alongside the development of suitable processing methodologies, such as extrusion and coating. This will enable industrial scale production at the high quality, inherent safety and reliability demanded by the aerospace industry and requires evaluation of the interaction of photoluminescent particles with both the processing methods and chemistries of supporting carrier materials. This is an interdisciplinary project involving processing, materials chemistry and measurement and requires a candidate from an engineering or technical discipline.

The scholarship provides 3 years of funding with a 6 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 60 credit award.

Eligibility

Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree in engineering, physics, chemistry or a related subject. They should also be eligible for UK/EU Fees.

Funding Notes

The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The bursary will be limited to a maximum of £14,483 p.a. dependent upon the applicant's financial circumstances.

There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.
