Full Project Detail:
This PhD will develop techniques for the detailed prediction of electricity demands including electric vehicle charging, electrification of heating and increased use of air conditioning. Priorities will include the effective representation of the stochastic nature of demands related to human behaviours – both individuals and collectively – and the temporal correlations between demands. These techniques are required in the design and operation of low-carbon energy systems powered by renewable energy including solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind power, and in the development of smart grids and smart cities. The operation of electrical networks, power electronics and energy storage including batteries are all very dependent on the patterns of electricity demands.

This PhD studentship is being funded as part of Loughborough University’s commitment to the Joint UK-India Clean Energy Centre (JUICE) which is a large consortium research project with partners throughout the UK and India. http://www.juice-centre.org.uk/
The student will be encouraged to visit India to engage in collaborative research with partners in one or more Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). This travel will be supported by the JUICE project.

The student will be based at Loughborough University and will join a vibrant group of researchers in the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST) http://www.lboro.ac.uk/research/crest/

Entry requirements:
Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in a numerate science or engineering subject. A relevant Master’s degree would be an advantage, as would proven skills in applied engineering, mathematics, statistics and software, together with excellent written and spoken English and a keen interest in environmental sustainability.

If awarded, the 3 year studentship will provide a provisional tax-free stipend of £14,777 p.a, plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate). While we welcome applications from non EU nationals, please be advised that it will only be possible to fund the tuition fees at the international rate and no stipend will be available.
