About the Project
This project is suitable of a PhD candidate, possessing a Masters or class 1 honours degree with laboratory experience. It will contain lab work and patient recruitment in a real world clinical setting.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term referring to chronic relapsing diseases of the gastrointestinal tract such as ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) which cannot currently be cured. The causes of IBD remain to be fully defined. However, disease aetiology is thought to be multifactorial with environmental factors such as diet being a major contributor. Experimental models have indicated that diet contributes to gut inflammation through several mechanisms including antigen presentation, alteration of gut permeability and changes in the composition of the gut microbiota.
The project aims to understand the two most commonly modifiable behaviours of patients with IBD (diet and lifestyle) on gut health. Using data acquired from a local tertiary hospital, the impact of diet and lifestyle on the composition and function of the gut microbiome will be assessed.
This project will put the successful candidate at the forefront of translational research, with findings potentially having a direct impact on lifestyle advice given to patients with IBD.
