About the Project

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship in the Centre for Pharmacology and Therapeutics (Division of Experimental Medicine) within the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine of Imperial College London, Hammersmith Hospital Campus. The primary purpose is to develop a hypothesis-driven research project in pulmonary vascular disease, exploring the functional biology of common genetic variants in pulmonary arterial hypertension. The successful applicant will have access to a wide range of laboratory and bioinformatics facilities as well as the expertise and resources of the group.

This work will provide an exciting training opportunity for a student with an interest in vascular disease and translational research. Relevant ongoing work in the laboratory includes integrated ‘omics’ analysis of samples from patients with pulmonary hypertension, including whole genome sequencing, transcriptomics, plasma proteomics and metabolomics, combined with well-characterised clinical phenotypes. The functional importance of key findings is defined in human cell models, using genome/epigenome editing tools such as CRISPR, as well as animal models of the disease. The appointee would work with experienced colleagues in both pulmonary hypertension and genetic research.

The successful applicant will be joining an internationally-renowned research group, within one of the world’s top research universities. The Division has an excellent publication record in top rated research journals and is well funded from a number of different sources. Full training will be given in all applicable techniques. Imperial College London provides excellent opportunities for research students’ training. All students benefit from a full programme of training in research and transferable skills organised through the Graduate School, the quality of which has been recognised several times at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.

The studentship is funded for 3 years with a tax-free bursary of £18,000 per annum and home/EU tuition fees included. Starting date is flexible, from August to October 2018. Academic supervisors are Professor Martin Wilkins and Dr Chris Rhodes.

Funding Notes

Students must satisfy the usual eligibility criteria, including adequate academic qualifications and UK residence.

Applicants must have or expect to have obtained at least a 2:1 from a UK University or the overseas equivalent in a relevant area of biochemistry, genetics, biotechnology or cell biology. A Masters degree (pass or above) may be applicable but not essential. Applicants must also meet Imperial College’s English language requirements – further details can be found at http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/registry/admissions/pgenglish.

Enquiries and full applications including an up-to-date CV and names and addresses of two academic referees should be sent to Martha Hill-Cousins (email: [Email Address Removed]).
