About the Project

The University of Queensland (UQ) and Denmark Technical University (DTU) have partnered on a Joint PhD Supervision Program to bolster our joint global research impact. Through the UQ-DTU Joint PhD Supervision Program you can receive a scholarship to study at two leading universities on projects with supervisors from each institution guiding your research. You will be associated with UQ as the lead institution, however, you will spend at least 6 months at DTU over the course of your degree.

Quantum interfaces between light and microwaves

Future quantum computers will consist of processors operating at microwave frequencies, connected by optical quantum links. Currently, however, efficient optical-to-microwave quantum interfaces do not exist. One option is to use radiation pressure. Essentially, radiation pressure from light drives the motion of a nanomechanical element, which is then encoded on a microwave field. At the University of Queensland, we have performed some of the earliest experiments exploring this concept. This PhD project will push those experiments into the quantum regime, demonstrating quantum conversion of information between the domains for the first time.

The project will involve nanofabrication/nanophotonics and quantum engineering. It will be undertaken within the Australian Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems and the Centre for Macroscopic Quantum States at Denmark Technical University; providing a rich environment for world leading research in quantum engineering.

The ideal candidate would have a strong academic background, and experimental experience in quantum physics or photonics.

This scholarship will be awarded to the first competitive applicant submitting an application.
