About the Project

The University of Queensland (UQ) and Denmark Technical University (DTU) have partnered on a Joint PhD Supervision Program to bolster our joint global research impact. Through the UQ-DTU Joint PhD Supervision Program you can receive a scholarship to study at two leading universities on projects with supervisors from each institution guiding your research. You will be associated with UQ as the lead institution, however, you will spend at least 6 months at DTU over the course of your degree.

Quantum sensing in biological systems

Motor molecules are at the heart of all living systems, controlling the structure and function of cells and sub-cellular systems. They are the nanoscale machines of life. However, due to their small size, they are exceptionally difficult to observe in their native state. At the University of Queensland we have developed quantum techniques to non-destructively observe biomolecule motion with unprecedented precision. This project will apply those techniques, augmented with quantum sensing capabilities at the Denmark Technical University, to study motor molecule dynamics with speeds higher than has been possible before.

The project will be undertaken within the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, the Australian Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems and the Centre for Macroscopic Quantum States at Denmark Technical University; providing a rich environment for world leading research in quantum biophysics.

The ideal candidate would have a strong academic background, and experimental experience in quantum physics or biophotonics.

This scholarship will be awarded to the first competitive applicant submitting an application.
